A Developer's Guide To Getting Paid

Shopify Billing 101

No matter what kind of app you build, getting paid for it is important.

When I first started building my Shopify app, I wasn't sure how I was supposed to collect payments from my users. After all, I had put a ton of my own, personal, development time into building Stages, and I wanted to make sure I got paid for that time.

I knew Shopify had their own payment gateway, but it wasn't entirely clear what the benefits were. I had a ton of questions.

  • Why would I want to use that over a service like Stripe, Braintree, or even PayPal?
  • What if the billing service isn't very robust?
  • How will I know that my customer has renewed or cancelled their subscription?
  • What happens when my app supports more platforms than Shopify? Will I need to use two or more billing services now?

In this guide, we're going to cover all of the above, and more, while writing the necessary code that you're going to need to take payments from your users with Shopify's billing service API.

That's what it all comes down to. Getting paid.
